My infant school teacher told my mum that I would ‘never pull up any roots’ meaning I wouldn’t reap much, educationally speaking. I was six years old at the time and those five words stuck like a label of inferiority. They came back to haunt me when I failed most of my O’ Levels (GCSEs) and again when I sat and failed English for the second time.
